For his leadership and valor, Second Lieutenant Atwood was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
Notes
After receiving a battlefield commission, Second Lieutenant Atwood commanded a platoon in Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On June 3, 1951, while leading his platoon up a hill near Yongchon, North Korea, he came under heavy enemy fire. Directing his men to take cover, he attacked the enemy position, killing 20 and destroyed six machine guns before being killed by an enemy mortar.
