Technical Sergeant Botter was a crew member of a B-29A Superfortress Bomber with the 372th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Wing. On October 23, 1951, while on a bombing mission, the aircraft was attacked by enemy MiGs near Namsi Airfield. His plane headed toward the Yellow Sea and crashed. He was taken Prisoner of War and was presumed dead on February 28, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
