Private First Class Burns was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On October 18, 1952, after defending his position on Hill 598 against a determined enemy, he was evacuated through the 32nd Collecting Station to the 7th Medical Battalion, but never arrived. He was presumed dead on March 10, 1954. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
