Lieutenant Commander Essex was the patrol plane commander a P2V-5 Neptune patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 7, based at Naval Air Station Barbers Point, Hawaii. On October 27, 1953 on of his engine failed and the plane was unable to maintain flight on one engine and crashed at sea killing him.
