For his leadership and valor, Major Fincher was awarded the Silver Star, the Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Major Fincher was the pilot of a F-86F Sabre Jet fighter bomber with the 39th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 35th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On August 22, 1952, while on a combat mission, his flight of four F-86s engaged four MiG-15s, His aircraft was shot down. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
