Private First Class Lavelle was a member of Company B, 2nd Engineer Combat Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy near Kunu-ri, North Korea on December 1, 1950 and died while a prisoner at Prisoner of War Camp Pyoktong, North Korea on June 20, 1951. His remains were recovered in March, 2011 and identified on July 27, 2011. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
