For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Longstaff was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star, the Silver Star, the Air Medal with 11 Gold Stars, the Purple Heart, the Army Distinguished Unit Citation, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
First Lieutenant Longstaff was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the Marine Observation Squadron 6, 1st Marine Air Wing. On December 3, 1950, he was evacuating wounded from Sinhung, Korea when his aircraft was shot down by enemy ground fire.
