First Lieutenant Longstaff was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the Marine Observation Squadron 6, 1st Marine Air Wing. On December 3, 1950, he was evacuating wounded from Sinhung, Korea when his aircraft was shot down by enemy ground fire.
