For his leadership and great bravery, Corporal Lyell was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Corporal Lyell was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. Upon the death of his platoon leader on August 31, 1951, he assumed command and attacked enemy position near Chup'a-ri, North Korea. Using a 75mm recoilless rifle and grenades, he led the successful attack. Later, he was mortally wounded by enemy mortar fire.
