1LT Pile was a pilot of a B-26C Marauder which crashed after being struck by enemy fire while on a bombing mission against enemy forces near Philipsweiler, Germany. His remains were recovered from the crash site in Germany by the Department of Defense recovery team during 2010 and 2011. 1LT Pile's remains were identified in 2014. 1LT Pile is interred at Arlington National Cemetery at Fort Myer, VA. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial, at Neupre (Neuville-en-Condroz), Belgium.
