First Lieutenant Flanagan was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in North Korea on August 1, 1952 and returned to duty on September 5, 1952. He was Killed in Action while leading volunteers from the 1st Battalion in an attack on Hill 1052 (Sandbag Castle) in the Satae-ri Valley, North Korea when he was killed by small arms fire on October 13, 1952. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
