Master Sergeant Handrich was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. During a night of August 25-26, 1950, the enemy attacked his position near Sobuk San Mountain, South Korea. He left his relatively safe area, exposing himself to enemy fire, to direct friendly mortar and artillery fire on the advancing enemy for nearly eight hours. In the morning of August 26, during a determined enemy assault, he rose and single handedly killed over seventy enemy soldiers until he was mortally wounded.
