Corporal Lyell was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. Upon the death of his platoon leader on August 31, 1951, he assumed command and attacked enemy position near Chup'a-ri, North Korea. Using a 75mm recoilless rifle and grenades, he led the successful attack. Later, he was mortally wounded by enemy mortar fire. |
