Lieutenant Gundert was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron VF-874 aboard the carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CV-31). On October 3, 1951, he was attacking a railroad near Songjin, North Korea his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire and he ejected over the ocean. When the recovery team reached him he was dead.
