USMA Class of 1928, Brigadier General Travis was a highly decorated veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a the Commanding General of the 9th Heavy Bomber Wing. On August 5, 1950, he was a passenger in a B-28 "Superfortress" with a full load of bombs on a training flight from Fairfield-Suisun Air Base, California. Just after takeoff, the bomber crashed and exploded killing 17 airmen.
