Specialist Fourth Class Kern was awarded the Purple Heart and the Korean Defense Service Medal.
Notes
Specialist Fourth Class Kern was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was wounded by North Korean infiltrators fighting south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on March 15, 1969. He was killed when his rescue helicopter crashed.
