Corporal Brunell was a member of Company C, 628th Tank Battalion assigned in Germany. On October 18, 1952, he was riding as tank commander with his head outside the hatch near Wurzburg, Germany, when the tank slid and his head struck a tree branch causing traumatic intracranial hemorrhage.
