Sergeant Hughes was a member of the 307th Military Police Battalion, U.S. Army. On June 4, 1951, he was a passenger on a C-119 Flying Boxcar transport assigned to Stewart Air Force Base, New York. The aircraft was on a routine training mission to Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, when it went out of control, accelerated to excessive speed and disintegrated killing 3 other servicemen near Jackson, Tennessee.
