Lieutenant Commander Wilson was a member of Attack Squadron 72, Carrier Air Wing 1 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (CVA-42). On December 14, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) on a missile suppression in support of a major strike in the Hanoi area of North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile and exploded. His remains were recovered on December 15, 1988 and identified on June 27, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
