For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant Gundert was awarded the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Gold Stars, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with five Gold Stars, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the Asia-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and two Presidential Unit Citations.
Notes
Lieutenant Gundert was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron VF-874 aboard the carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CV-31). On October 3, 1951, he was attacking a railroad near Songjin, North Korea his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire and he ejected over the ocean. When the recovery team reached him he was dead.
