Lieutenant Cartier was the pilot of a F-84E Thunderjet fighter with the 9th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 49th Fighter Bomber Wing. On January 21, 1952, his aircraft crashed on takeoff from Taegu Airfield (K-2) going to Seoul.
