The World War II Victory Medal, established by Act of Congress on 6 July 1945, is awarded for military service between 7 December 1941 and 31 December 1946, both dates inclusive.

National Defense Service Medal

The National Defense Service Medal was established by Executive Order on 22 April 1953, as amended on 11 January 1966, 18 October 1991 and 28 March 2003. It is awarded for honorable active service in the United States Armed Forces for any period between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1954, 1 January 1961 and 14 August 1974, 2 August 1990 and 30 November 1995 or 11 September 2001 through a date to be determined. Broadly recognizing honorable active service during a period of national emergency, the award does not apply to members of the National Guard or Reserve temporarily on duty for training only, temporary duty on boards or commissions, or temporary duty to take a physical examination. 

Staff Sergeant Abdo was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War he was serving in the U.S. Air Force.
