For his leadership and great valor, Private First Class Brown was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Private First Class Brown was a member of Company D, 8th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. While attacking enemy positions near Kasan, South Korea on September 5, 1950, he exposed himself to enemy fire on a 50 foot wall to deliver rifle fire on the assaulting enemy until his ammunition was exhausted. He threw his remaining grenades, then his used his entrenching tool as a weapon. He drove ten enemy soldiers from the wall until he was killed by the enemy.
