Major Buerk was a member of the 614th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On April 11, 1971, he was the pilot of a North American Super Sabre Fighter (F-100D) on a mission over South Vietnam, when the aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
