Corporal Burns was awarded the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal.
Corporal Burns was a member of the 29th Topographic Battalion, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers surveying areas in the Philippines. On January 29, 1951, he was on a jeep reconnaissance patrol when his vehicle was ambushed by communist "Huk" guerrillas, killing him.
