Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class Chauncy was a crew member of a PBM-5S Mariner patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 892, based at Naval Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. On August 7, 1952, the aircraft was returning to its base with only one engine in bad weather. It struck Luzon Mariveles Mountains, Philippines killing 13 crewmen.
