Major Dawson was a member of the 614th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On March 23, 1966, he was the pilot of a North American Super Sabre Fighter (F-100F) on a mission over North Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on September 30, 1977 and identified on October 25, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
