For his leadership and valor, Private First Class Garcia was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Private First Class Garcia was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. His company was assigned the mission of seizing and securing a heavily fortified hill near Sanghjong-ni, South Korea on May 26, 1951. He took an automatic weapon from a fallen comrade and led his squad in the attack. Although badly wounded he continued the attack killing 12 enemy soldiers before being mortally wounded.
