Hospital Corpsman Third Class Helems was a member of the Company C, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division. Wounded a few days earlier, on June 9, 1951, he was accompanying a mine clearing detail near Sanghanjon-ni, North Korea, when it came under artillery fire. He was tending his wounded comrades when he was killed.
