Lieutenant Colonel Hrdlicka was a member of the 563rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Air Base, Thailand. On May 18, 1965, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission near Sam Neua, Houa Phan Province, Laos. His aircraft was hit by ground fire and caught fire. He ejected safely to the ground and was taken prisoner by the Pathet Lao. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
