For his leadership and great valor, Private First Class Kahoohanohano was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Private First Class Kahoohanohano was in charge of a machine gun squad, Company H, 2nd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On September 1, 1951 in North Korea, his unit was overrun. He ordered his squad to withdraw and single handedly held of the enemy off until he was killed.
