Lieutenant Commander Kean was the patrol plane commander of a patrol bomber, P2V-4 Neptune, from Patrol Squadron 7, based at the Naval Air Station Quonset Point, Rhode Island. On November 21, 1952, during an anti-submarine warfare exercise, the aircraft crashed into Narragansett Bay, killing eight crewmen.
