For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant King was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
First Lieutenant King was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. In Korea, he was a member of the 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy near Hoengsong, South Korea on February 13, 1951 and died while a prisoner on April 15, 1951.
