Lieutenant Commander Koenig, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Detachment 42, Carrier Early Warning Squadron 12, Carrier Air Wing 1 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (CVA-42). On December 14, 1966, he was a crew member of a Grumman Tracer Electronic Surveillance Aircraft (E-1B) over North Vietnam when one of the engines failed and the aircraft was ditched into the South China Sea. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
