Commander McCue was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War he was the Commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Station, Salem, Massachusetts. On November 13, 1952, he was the pilot of a Coast Guard HTL-1 helicopter on a routine training flight, which crashed in the Beverly, Massachusetts area killing him and his crewman.
