Commander McCue was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Commander McCue was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War he was the Commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Station, Salem, Massachusetts. On November 13, 1952, he was the pilot of a Coast Guard HTL-1 helicopter on a routine training flight, which crashed in the Beverly, Massachusetts area killing him and his crewman.
