Ensign Reid was the navigator of a Lockheed P2V-5 Neptune patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 19, based at Naval Air Station New Brunswick, Maine. On September 4, 1954, his aircraft was on routine patrol duty in the Korean area about 40 off the coast of Siberia, when it was shot down by a Russian fighter. The plane was ditched and the crew survived except for Ensign Reid.
