Captain Rich was a member of Fighter Squadron 96, Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65). On May 19, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) on an attack near Hanoi, North Vietnam. When the aircraft was over the target it was hit by ground fire and crashed. His remains were recovered on April 26, 2000 and identified on October 10, 2000. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
