Colonel Vinson was a member of the 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Danang, South Vietnam. On April 24, 1968, he was the bombardier/navigator of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on an armed mission looking for targets near Quang Khe, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on October 5, 1993 and identified on September 11, 1998. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
