SUMMARY:75th Anniversary of Allied Landings at Anzio and Nettuno
DESCRIPTION:Sicily-Rome American Cemetery hosted a series of commemorative events on January 22\, 2019\, beginning with a ceremony in the morning. to mark the 75th anniversary of the Allied landings at Anzio and Nettuno. The ceremony included a wreath laying as well as remarks from Rear Adm. Matthew Ziegler\, Gen. Enzo Vecciarelli\, and ABMC Commissioner Benjamin Cassidy. Personal stories of some of those interred or memorialized at the cemetery were also shared during the event. \nLater that same day\, the cemetery hosted a luminary and a concert. Every headstone\, as well as the names on the Walls of the Missing\, were illuminated with candles. And throughout the day\, the names of all the people who are buried or memorialized at the cemetery were read aloud. \nThese events paid tribute to the almost 11\,000 Americans honored at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery\, who died fighting to liberate Italy. Stalemated at the formidable Gustav Line north of Naples in late 1943\, the Allies outflanked the line with surprise\, amphibious landings at Anzio and Nettuno on January 22\, 1944. They then broke through the defensive lines with a massive offensive in May 1944. By early June of 1944\, after almost a year of arduous campaigning\, Rome was liberated.

DESCRIPTION:On December 1\, 2018 Normandy American Cemetery will welcome volunteers from Wreaths Across America to lay more than 9\,000 wreaths in the cemetery. These balsam wreaths\, shipped to France from Maine\, serve as a visual tribute to the fallen in the midst of the holiday season. That same day\, U.S. Memory Normandy\, a French organization\, will place LED candles on every headstone in the cemetery for a luminary that evening. Visitors to the cemetery that day will be able to witness\, as well as participate in the efforts of an American and French organization coming together to honor our fallen from World War II. \nTimeline of Events on December 1\, 2018: \n12:00 p.m.           Wreath placement begins in cemetery \n4 p.m.                   Ceremony in memorial area to mark completion of wreath placement \n5 p.m.                   Luminary begins \n8 p.m.                   Luminary ends and cemetery closes \nVisitors can come to Normandy American Cemetery December 1 through December 4 to see the wreaths in place.

DESCRIPTION:ABMC hosted a ceremony at ABMC’s Honolulu Memorial to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Tarawa and to rededicate the memorial\, which recently underwent a significant restoration project. \nParticipants in the event included representatives from ABMC\, the National Cemetery Administration\, and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. \nFollowing the ceremony\, the families of recently identified MIA’s from Tarawa had the opportunity to install an ABMC rosette next to the name of their family member listed in the Courts of the Missing at the memorial.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day 2018 at North Africa American Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Americans and Tunisians\, as well as diplomats from other nations\, gathered at North Africa American Cemetery in Tunisia for the 2018 Veterans Day Ceremony. Highlights from the ceremony included Mohamed Mouhli\, recently retired senior gardener\, laying a wreath on behalf of ABMC as well as Girl Scouts of Brownie Troop 40502 and Junior Troop 40503 laying 22 roses. The Girl Scouts laid the roses in honor of the four women buried in the cemetery as well as the 18 honored on the Walls of the Missing.

SUMMARY:World War I Centennial Ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery to Mark Armistice
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 11\, 2018\, marked the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. To commemorate this occasion\, President Donald J. Trump\, as well as ABMC Secretary William M. Matz\, participated in a ceremony at Suresnes American Cemetery in France. ABMC manages nine WWI cemeteries in Europe\, where more than 35\,000 Americans who died in the Great War are honored. Matz delivered remarks during the ceremony and introduced the president. “During this Centennial period\, we have reaffirmed our mission to honor the 4.7 million Americans who served in the Great War\,” said Matz. “In France and all along the Western Front\, American troops proved decisive in the Allied victory. American soldiers fought side by side with their wartime allies\, helping to stop the final enemy offensive\, to turn the tide of battle\, and finally to end the war.” \nMatz then introduced President Trump\, who emphasized the importance of the ABMC mission and honored all those who gave the last full measure of devotion. “We are gathered together at this hallowed resting place to pay tribute to the brave Americans who gave their last breath in that mighty struggle\,” said President Trump in his remarks. “Here on the revered grounds of Suresnes American Cemetery lie more than 1\,500 U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in the first world war.” \nDuring the ceremony President Trump presented Matz with an American flag that recently had flown over the White House. The flag will be on display at Suresnes American Cemetery. \nPrior to the ceremony\, Matz escorted Trump into the plot area of the cemetery. There he was greeted by Superintendent Keith Stadler\, who spoke briefly about the cemetery\, and those honored there.
