SUMMARY:The Faces of Margraten 2018 at Netherlands American Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Netherlands American Cemetery will host the Faces of Margraten from May 2-6\, 2018 with an opening ceremony on May 2\, 2018 at 3 p.m. The Stichting Verenigde Adoptanten Amerikaanse Oorlogsgraven (Foundation United Adopters American War Graves) has worked to create a unique tribute to the men and women buried or memorialized at the cemetery. They have been collecting photos since 2014 in order to give a face to the names on the marble headstones and the Walls of the Missing. During the Faces of Margraten\, the photos will be placed directly next to the headstone or wall. Visitors will be able to walk through the cemetery and see the faces of the men and women that gave their lives in the fight to liberate the Netherlands. To date the group has collected more than 5\,000 photos. \nA new addition this year includes the debut of the Voices of Margraten\, a free audio tour\, available beginning May 2\, 2018. Through a partnership with Laudio\, and using recovered documents and  eyewitness accounts of soldiers’ families and those who keep the memory of these men and women alive\, visitors can hear the story of one of the fallen in the cemetery. Available in English and Dutch\, hear the story of Pfc. Carmelo Amoroso. Here’s an excerpt from the tour: “That day\, when you weren’t here yet\, Carmelo\, the birds just sat on their branch\, silently. They didn’t know how. They didn’t even know that they could sing!” \nDownload the free app\, Voices of Margraten. While it’s best to use the app in the cemetery\, you can still enjoy the story from anywhere in the world: \n\nVisit www.degezichtenvanmargraten.nl to download the audio tour. Alternatively\, you can download the izi.travel app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. After downloading the app\, search for the Voices of Margraten tour within the app for English speakers. Search Stemmen van Margraten tour within the app for Dutch speakers.\nTo download the audio tour\, you need an internet/wifi connection. If using the audio tour in the cemetery\, your phone will only utilize the GPS capability. Cellular service is not required.\nThe audio tour starts near the entrance of the cemetery at the information desk. The tour narrator will direct you over the cemetery grounds. Alternatively\, you can also follow the route on your phone’s screen.\nThe audio tour will be available for one year\n\nVisiting the cemetery is always free\, and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Luminary Event at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 11\, 2017 Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery hosted a luminary event to mark the 99th anniversary of the end of World War I.  As dusk fell at the cemetery\, thousands of headstones were lit with candles\, creating a powerful image of light overpowering the darkness. Attendees had the chance to walk through the cemetery until 7:30 p.m. and learn stories of some of the Americans honored within these hallowed grounds. Visitors learned about the Great War and the American sacrifice\, and reflected on the enormity of this conflict that ended nearly 100 years ago. \nThis was a partial luminary event with only a portion of the more than 14\,000 headstones lit. The cemetery hopes to expand the program in November 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day 2017 at Cambridge American Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Service members from the 501st Combat Support Wing at RAF Alconbury supported the 2017 Veterans Day Ceremony at Cambridge American Cemetery. The theme of “youth” pervaded the ceremony to include remarks from Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Sir Keith Pearson and Lt. Gen. Richard M Clark\, commander of the 3rd Air Force. Both men highlighted how young the Americans of World War II were. These young men fulfilled the role given to them\, while experiencing the horrors of war\, which served as a testament to their competence and training. Attendees that day included World War II veteran Allan P. Hallett\, who served in the 389th Bomb Group.

SUMMARY:Facebook Live: Examining How Nations Honored Their Fallen after World War II
DESCRIPTION:After World War II\, nations built cemeteries to bury their war dead. Every country approached this differently. With millions of people killed during the conflict\, nations had to bury massive numbers of war dead while also building new cemeteries in foreign lands. In examining the cemetery designs closely\, a visitor can begin to understand how each nation perceived its own role in the war\, and chose to honor those killed in conflict. Join us on Tuesday\, October 17 at 1 p.m. for a Facebook Live chat with Dr. Christopher Hamner\, lead historian for ABMC’s Understanding Sacrifice education program\, and associate professor of U.S. History at George Mason University. We’ll look at British\, German and American cemeteries from World War II.
