Sgt. Yost was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On September 5, 1950, his unit attacked enemy positions on Hill 755 near Tabu-dong, South Korea. His unit ran out of ammunition and began withdrawing, it ran into a roadblock established by the North Koreans. His unit tried to eliminate the roadblock but on the following day, Sergeant Yost became Missing in Action. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered at the time. Through the work of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, the remains of Sgt. Eugene W. Yost were accounted for in 2018. His name is permanently inscribed in the “Courts of the Missing” at the Honolulu Memorial.
