First Lieutenant Cope was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he commanded the 3rd Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on May 20, 1951 and returned to duty June 30, 1951. On October 6, 1951, as he led his platoon in an attack on Hill 867 in North Korea, he saw that the other platoons of Company K, were pinned down by enemy fire. He directed a frontal assault which was successful and was mortally wounded.
