USMA Class of 1951, First Lieutenant Niemann was the pilot of a F-86E Sabre Jet fighter bomber with the 334th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On April 12, 1953, while escorting reconnaissance aircraft, his flight of four F-86s engaged two MiG-15s seven miles south of Sakchu, North Korea. His aircraft was lost in a cloud and never recovered. He was presumed dead on April 13, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
