Major Monroe was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the pilot of a F-51D Mustang night fighter with the 39th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 35th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On April 17, 1951, while on a combat mission, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire. He bailed out successfully near Kumwha, Korea, but search and rescue helicopter was driven off by ground fire. His remains were recovered. |
