Commander Hinnant was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard ship ROCKAWAY (WAVP-377) on the Ocean Weather Station HOW. On The evening of December 6. 1950, he made a dive below the ROCKAWAY attempting to free a line from a target raft, which had fouled in the port screw. He did not resurface. His remains were not recovered.
