Petty Officer Wilkes was a crew member of PBM-5 patrol bomber with Patrol Squadron 46, U.S. Navy. He was listed as Missing in Action while participating in aerial support over Korea on November 5, 1950. He was presumed dead on March 29, 1951. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial
