Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery Reception Room Collection

The Curator’s Collection highlights the restoration and refurnishing of the reception room at Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, completed in June 2026 as part of ABMC’s ongoing effort to preserve the historic character of its overseas cemeteries. Since 2018, ABMC has researched and documented reception rooms across its sites, restoring them to reflect their original design and purpose as welcoming spaces for visitors and families.

Originally created for next of kin visiting the cemetery, reception rooms featured comfortable furnishings, artwork, fireplaces, and desks, providing a warm and familiar environment. While sharing common elements, each room reflected the unique architectural style of its cemetery and era.

The Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery reception room is among the latest spaces restored through this initiative. Guided by archival research, photographs, correspondence, and design records from ABMC and the National Archives, the collections team recreated the room’s historic appearance while maintaining its modern role within the Visitor Center. The project also supported a comprehensive inventory of the room’s furnishings, helping preserve and document these historic objects for future research and public engagement.

1920s fireplace and accessories

This 1920s fireplace features original decorative accessories, including ornate fireplace tools with volute details, graceful escutcheon supports, and a flared shovel. Together, these elements helped create the warm and welcoming atmosphere intended for Next of Kin and visitors to the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery reception room.

1930s Louis Philippe armchairs

A full-length figure in the round representing a woman holding a sword on her right side surmounted by a rooster and an olive branch in her left hand. A personification of France. Numerous graphite and felt-tip pen marks used for scaling up the figure.

Bronze laurel branch sculpture

This bronze laurel branch, displayed on the entrance wall beneath the inscription “Président de la République française,” symbolizes honor, remembrance, and the enduring partnership between France and the United States. Its elegant design reflects the commemorative purpose of the cemetery and serves as a lasting tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Reception room furnishings

The three-seat sofa, armchairs, and coffee table help recreate the warm and welcoming atmosphere that has long characterized the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery reception room. The American club-style leather seating provides comfort for visitors, while the round coffee table, featuring a green leather top and decorative gold floral frieze beneath glass, reflects the blend of elegance and functionality found throughout the room’s historic design. Together, these furnishings support the room’s original purpose as a comfortable space for reflection and gathering for Next of Kin and visitors.
