Private First Class Kahoohanohano was in charge of a machine gun squad, Company H, 2nd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On September 1, 1951 in North Korea, his unit was overrun. He ordered his squad to withdraw and single handedly held of the enemy off until he was killed.
