Private Bartberger was a member of the 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded by the enemy in South Korea on July 28, 1950 and returned to duty on August 4, 1950. He was seriously wounded again on August 19, 1950 and died of those wounds later that day.
