For his leadership and valor, Ensign Patton was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Ensign Patton was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron 192 aboard the aircraft carrier USS PRINCETON (CV-37). On March 10, 1951, while on a combat mission near Changhung-ni, Korea, his aircraft received a direct hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed 15 miles east of Pukchong, Korea. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on May 3, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
