Captain Netherland was a member of Attack Squadron 94, Carrier Air Wing 5 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS HANCOCK (CVA-19). On May 10, 1967, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) on a mission about 10 miles south of Haiphong, North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on September 12, 1989 and identified on June 1, 2000. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
